Herbalism

Herbal medicine has been used by humanity since the beginning of time.  Herbalism uses the knowledge of different herbs and their uses to help resolve different health conditions.

Many cultures around the world still have medicine men and women who have had this ancient knowledge passed on to them down the generations. Now days there are also many institutes that train students about the use of different herbs in conjunction with other subjects such as human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and consultation skills.
The most common ways of consuming herbal medicine in the west is to either drinking the herbs, in the form of a tea or tincture, swallowing a capsule or tablet or adding herbs to meals.  Culinary herbs also have therapeutic value, and have been deliberately been used as part of the daily diet in many cultures for thousands of years.

There is also a growing number of scientific studies done on the herbal medicine both in vitro and on human populations. It is important when considering taking herbal medicine to check with your primary health practitioner to see if the herbal medicine is safe for you and won’t interact with any other conventional medication or supplements you are also taking.

Although health professionals since ancient times have known and worked at the level of the gut for the overall good health and vitality of their clients, it is only really in the last decade that the gut microbiome, it’s connections to all other body systems and the role it plays in the general health and wellbeing of every person has been established through scientific exploration.

The gut microbiome is the encompasses the environment inside the intestines.

Naturopathy

Naturopathic philosophy consists of three main tenets; to treat the whole person – body, mind and spirit, heal the root cause of the illness, rather than just addressing the symptoms, and the understanding that prevention is better than cure.

A typical naturopathic consultation is aimed at understanding your medical history, lifestyle signs and health goals.  The Naturopath will then use their training in anatomy and physiology, nutrition as well as their experience to formulate a health plan for the client. 

This may also include organising any relevant tests, prescribing supplements, herbal medicine or any other modality that they have been trained in, such as therapeutic massage, Flower Essences as well as nutritional and lifestyle recommendations.  The Naturopath supports and guides the person through their health plan.

Hypnotherapy

The most common version of Hypnotherapy brings the person into a state of relaxation and focused concentration, similar to the experience one has when reading a book or daydreaming. In this state positive suggestions can be introduced with the purpose of healing at the level of mind and body.

Water is essential to all life on this planet.

By molecular weight we are made up of 90% water.  We can’t live without this life-giving fluid. The recommended daily intake is around 30ml/kg of body weight, sipped throughout the day. Water has many uses in our body including  supporting our daily detoxification, blood building, brain function and blood pressure and kidney function.
Drink the purest water you have access to.
If you only drink once you feel thirsty and you are already dehydrated.

Hummingbird health mint

Mint (Mentha spp.)

There are hundreds of mint varieties world-wide in the Lamiaceae family. Many have been used traditionally from North Africa, India to the middle East as teas and condiments like Tzatziki and Raita to cool the palate and digestive tract. Useful when both the climate and the dish is hot, or the body feverish. The mint found in Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam are not related. They are belong to Polygonaceae family and have different chemical components and different traditional uses, but are also used in flavouring dishes.

One of the main active constituents of the Lamiaceae family, particularly peppermint, are the volatile oils – menthol is one of most commonly used cooling essential oils. If you are making a tea always keep the lid on the teapot or place a saucer over the cup to reduce the volatile oils escaping with the steam.

The volatile oils and rosmarinic acid may support the body and normal immune function.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita/ chamomila)

Asteraceae family. There are two main species used for tea – German and Roman chamomile. Dry the flowers and drink as a tea. Because chamomile also contains volatile oils keep the cup covered as it steeps so you don’t loose the precious essential oils.

Peter Rabbits mother put Peter Rabbit to bed when he was ill with a cup of chamomile tea. This little story belies the understanding that chamomile may support normal digestive function.

Caution – drinking chamomile tea with a meal may inhibit the absorption of iron.
